CS2 Skins & Cosmetics
A deep dive into everything that makes CS2 skins unique – from rarity grades and float values to rare patterns and StatTrak counters.
What Are CS2 Skins?
Skins are cosmetic weapon finishes in Counter-Strike 2 – they change how your guns, knives, and gloves look without affecting gameplay or giving any competitive edge. You get skins from opening cases, random drops at the end of matches, or by buying them on the Steam Community Market. The skin economy in CS2 is massive – some rare items trade for tens of thousands of dollars, while others cost less than a cup of coffee. Every skin has unique properties like float value, pattern seed, and optional StatTrak tracking that make each one a little different. On csko.gg, our skinchanger lets you try every single skin in the game for free on any of our servers – no cases to open, no money to spend.
Skin Rarities
CS2 skins are divided into seven rarity tiers. Consumer Grade and Industrial Grade skins drop as random end-of-match rewards or come from game collections (like the Dust 2 Collection or Safehouse Collection). From Mil-Spec upward, skins are found in weapon cases. The rarer the tier, the lower the drop chance – and the higher the market price.
Consumer Grade (White)
The most common skins in CS2 – white-bordered items that drop randomly after matches or belong to map-based collections like the Dust 2 Collection, Train Collection, and Overpass Collection. Examples include PP-Bizon | Sand Dashed, SCAR-20 | Sand Mesh, and P250 | Boreal Forest. They typically sell for under $0.10 on the Steam Market, but they play an important role in trade-up contracts – ten Consumer Grade skins from the same collection can be traded up for one Industrial Grade skin from that collection.
Industrial Grade (Light Blue)
One step above Consumer Grade, Industrial skins also come from collections and random drops rather than weapon cases. You will find skins like MP7 | Forest DDPAT (Safehouse Collection), MAC-10 | Candy Apple, MAG-7 | Sand Dune, and P90 | Sand Spray in this tier. Most cost under a dollar, but certain Industrial Grade skins from discontinued or rare collections (like the Bravo Collection) can actually be worth a surprising amount due to their scarcity. They serve as trade-up material for Mil-Spec skins.
Mil-Spec (Blue)
Mil-Spec is the baseline rarity for case drops. You will see these blue-bordered skins the most when opening cases – they make up the majority of unboxing results. Do not let the "common" label fool you though. The Mil-Spec tier includes some genuinely solid designs like the M4A4 Dragon King, AK-47 Blue Laminate, and USP-S Blueprint. Many of these skins look fantastic in-game, especially in Factory New condition, and they rarely cost more than a few dollars on the market.
Restricted (Purple)
Restricted skins sit in the sweet spot of the rarity scale – uncommon enough to feel rewarding when you unbox one, but not so rare that they are out of reach for most players. The purple border signals a noticeable step up in artwork complexity. Skins in this tier tend to feature bolder color schemes, more intricate patterns, and designs that genuinely turn heads in-game. If you are building a loadout on a budget, Restricted skins often give you the best bang for your buck.
Classified (Pink)
When that pink glow shows up during an unboxing, your heart rate jumps. Classified skins are rare enough that pulling one from a case always feels like a win. These skins feature detailed, eye-catching artwork – vivid colors, complex textures, and designs that are immediately recognizable from across the map. Skins like the AWP Hyper Beast, M4A1-S Printstream, and AK-47 Neon Rider all live in this tier. Market prices start climbing here, especially for low-float versions.
Covert (Red)
Covert is the highest rarity for standard weapon skins and the red border is what every case opener is chasing. These are the headliners – the skins that people actually remember by name. AWP Dragon Lore, AK-47 Fire Serpent, M4A4 Howl, AK-47 Wild Lotus – these are all Covert-grade. The drop rates are brutal, which is exactly why pulling one feels electric. Covert skins in Factory New or with rare pattern seeds can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the market.
Exceedingly Rare (Gold) ★
The gold tier is reserved for knives and gloves – the most prestigious cosmetics in CS2. Every case has roughly a 0.26% chance of giving you one. Knives completely change your first-person model, draw animation, and inspect animation – pulling out a Butterfly Knife or a Karambit just feels different. Gloves are equally impactful, covering your entire viewmodel hands. Combine a rare knife pattern like a Karambit Fade with a matching pair of Sport Gloves and you have a loadout worth a used car. On csko.gg, our skinchanger lets you try any knife and glove combination for free.
Float Value – Skin Wear
Every skin in CS2 has a float value – a decimal number between 0.00 and 1.00 that determines how worn the skin looks in-game. Lower float means cleaner, more pristine appearance. Higher float means more visible scratches, paint chips, and battle damage. The float is locked in the moment a skin drops or gets unboxed – you cannot change it afterward. Even within the same wear tier, a skin at 0.01 float looks noticeably different from one at 0.06.
Patterns & Stickers
Every skin in CS2 has a pattern seed – a number from 0 to 999 that determines exactly how the texture wraps around the weapon model. Two AK-47 Case Hardened skins with the same float but different pattern seeds can look wildly different. One might have a mostly gold body, while another – a "Blue Gem" pattern – is covered in vivid blue. These rare pattern seeds can multiply a skin's value by 10x, 50x, or even more. The most famous is the #661 AK-47 Case Hardened, considered the ultimate Blue Gem. Stickers add another layer of customization – you can apply up to four per weapon. Major Championship stickers featuring pro team logos and player signatures are especially popular, and rare Katowice 2014 holo stickers alone can be worth thousands.
StatTrak™
StatTrak™ skins come with a built-in LED kill counter on the weapon that tracks every frag you score. StatTrak versions drop at roughly 10x lower rates than standard versions, making them significantly rarer and more expensive. There is something satisfying about watching that counter tick up – and other players can see it too when they pick up your weapon or inspect it on the ground. On csko.gg, the skinchanger lets you enable StatTrak on any skin for free.
Souvenir Skins
Souvenir skins are special drops from CS2 Major Championship matches. Each one comes with unique gold stickers showing the two teams playing when it dropped, the tournament logo, and the MVP player's autograph. Souvenir skins cannot be StatTrak and are among the rarest items in the entire game. A Souvenir AWP Dragon Lore from a major final is one of the most expensive CS2 items in existence – some have sold for six figures. Even common souvenir skins carry a certain prestige that standard versions lack.
